Dietary Changes Curb Hot Flashes for Some Women

Adding soybeans and removing animal-sourced foods from your diet may decrease the frequency and severity of hot flashes, according to a study published online July 14, 2021, in the journal Menopause. Study participants were postmenopausal women who reported having two or more hot flashes per day. Half of the women were instructed to follow a low-fat vegan diet, including one-half cup of cooked soybeans daily; the other half—the control group—made no dietary changes. After 12 weeks, 59 percent of the vegan diet group reported becoming free of moderate and severe hot flashes, whereas the control group reported no changes. The vegan diet group also reported fewer total hot flashes, fewer moderate-to-severe hot flashes, and an improved quality of life. If you have problematic hot flashes and choose not to use hormone replacement therapy, making significant dietary changes may help. Even if you’re not willing to go strictly vegan—no animal-sourced foods whatsoever—eating more plant foods and fewer animal foods will benefit your overall health, and you may find that it does help your hot flashes. It certainly won’t hurt to give it a try.

Lower LDL Linked with Lower Incidence of Dementia

Here’s another important reason to reduce elevated LDL cholesterol levels: According to a study published July 23, 2021, in Lancet Healthy Longevity, higher LDL in middle age is associated with a higher risk of dementia later in life. The researchers discovered that, among study participants between the ages of 40 and 64, those with LDL cholesterol levels above 200 mg/dL were more likely to have been diagnosed with dementia more than 10 years later, compared to people with LDL levels less than 100 mg/dL. None of the almost 2 million participants had been diagnosed with dementia at the time their initial LDL cholesterol levels were measured. The researchers suggested that elevated LDL cholesterol be considered a potentially modifiable risk factor for dementia. Other factors that have been linked with a higher risk of dementia include hypertension, obesity, diabetes, depression, physical inactivity, smoking, alcohol consumption, and social isolation.

Postmenopausal women often struggle with weight management, elevated LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and other changes that increase their risks of chronic disease, and many women have difficulty making and sticking with healthy lifestyle changes. According to a study published online July 19, 2021, in the journal Menopause, participating in weekly dance classes can have multiple positive effects women’s health. The study participants were postmenopausal women, mean age 57, who took 90-minute dance classes three times a week for 16 weeks. At the study’s conclusion, the women had lower triglycerides, higher HDL cholesterol, and improved fitness, body composition, and self-esteem. The women’s coordination, agility, and aerobic capability also improved.
